Is There Any Secret to the Color of Propane Tanks?

I have noticed various different colors of propane tanks. Some are white, some are tan, some an off shade of white. Is there a secret to the color and could I paint my propane tank to match the exterior of my home?

- Frank in Dewey

Frank, propane tanks are painted a light color to reflect the heat. A dark colored tank will absorb too much heat from the sun and will cause the relief value to “pop off” and reduce pressure inside your tank. We do not recommend painting your propane tank because the latex paint will flake due to the expansion and contraction of the tank. In addition, the tank manufacturer uses a special tank primer and paint made specifically for metal tanks.
