I want to plant some low-water use plants, but I also want a yard that has color. Can you recommend some plants?
Shirley in Prescott
Shirley, color is one of the most important factors in a unified garden design. The secret is that a landscape designed to be “low-water use” does not have to be low-color. There are many water wise plants that can be used to create an attractive, colorful, inviting setting in your yard. Here is a list of low-water use plants, full of color: Mimosa Tree, full sun medium sized ornamental with exotic fragrant flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Potentilla, full sun a densely branched shrub with yellow flowers. This hearty plant tolerates poor soil, heat and drought conditions. Spanish Broom, full sun, a fast growing evergreen shrub with clusters of fragrant yellow flowers that blooms all summer. A good choice for dry locations. Russian Sage, full sun, a tall lavender-blue flower that is a hardy shrub blooming all summer. Blue-Eyed Grass, full to partial sun, bright blue flowers that blooms from late spring to mid summer. Paprika Yarrow, full sun with fern-like foliage that likes hot, dry situations with poor soil. There are many more plants that are low maintenance and selecting colorful low-water use plants is easy to do in our area.
